Dr James Tan is an Orthopaedic Surgeon in Singapore with over 10 years of experience in sports surgery and exercise medicine. He has treated athletes from the Singapore National Teams and professional footballers from the Singapore Premier League and the Young Lions. His clinical work includes both surgical and minimally-invasive management of sports injuries and joint conditions, with a focus on arthroscopic (keyhole) and minimally invasive techniques. Dr Tan is a member of the Asian Shoulder and Elbow Group and a founding member of the Singapore Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Society.
Dr Tan graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at NUS and obtained his Masters of Medicine (Orthopaedics). He is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh). He completed subspecialty training in sports orthopaedics at the Technical University of Munich, Germany, under Professor Andreas Imhoff.

Dr Tan specialises in treating sports injuries of the knee, shoulder and elbow joints, as well as cartilage and meniscus conditions. He is experienced in minimally invasive (keyhole) tendon and ligament repair, joint replacement, and muscle–tendon transfers of the shoulder. He has also published several original research articles on the shoulder and knee.
Dr Tan serves as the Principal Investigator for tissue engineering projects (bone, meniscus and tendon) supported by National Medical Research Council grants. He collaborates with scientists from Nanyang Technological University, the Technical University of Munich, A*STAR, Osteopore and Trendlines Medical Singapore. Committed to medical education, he is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, and at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine.
